Requirements:
This position requires an M.A. or M.S. in anthropology, archaeology, or a related discipline with an emphasis in archaeology and geospatial technologies. Equivalent experience may be counted for degree requirements. Registration as a Registered Professional Archaeologist is also required, if applicant is eligible. Geospatial technologies include mathematical spatial analysis, satellite and aerial remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems, total station surveying, geophysics, spatial visualization, and photogrammetry. A general, technical understanding of all of these technologies with advanced specialization in at least two spatial methods is desirable. Previous cultural resource management (CRM) experience is preferred. Continuing professional education, professional involvement, and adherence to professional ethical standards are integral to this position.
Job Description:
Under the general supervision of the department director, the geospatial analyst will provide technical services to support archaeological, historical, architectural, and ethnographic projects conducted by SRI. Specifically, the position includes the following duties:
- Assist the department head with the design of project-specific methods
- Independently implement geospatial methods on projects with tasks to include a review of the work plan, project planning, data collection, data verification, analysis, interpretation, and reporting. This work will include field mapping; map and graphic production using GIS and other specialized software; recording spatial metadata; writing report sections; conducting pattern recognition and statistical spatial analyses; digitizing maps; printing maps; establishing spatial control at sites or in project areas; supervising geospatial field staff; preparing and monitoring budgets; and preparing project briefings
- Oversee the daily production of geospatial and cartographic products.
- Interface on a day-to-day basis with peer departments (Information Technology & Publications) to allow the exchange of spatial data to internal and external clients.
- Meet with project managers, principal investigators, and project directors to discuss the details of job requests, implementation of geospatial methods, scheduling of fieldwork, and job status updates.
- Assist the department head with the design and delivery of training on geospatial methods and techniques to internal and external clients.
- Train and provide technical assistance to assistant geospatial analysts and geospatial technicians.
- Supervise the work of assistant geospatial analysts and geospatial technicians on individual projects.
- Conduct research and testing of new methods.
- Maintain departmental equipment and supplies to include scheduling, inventory, check-in/out, maintenance, and accuracy testing.
